2016 marked the dawn of the Kirby Smart era. Georgia opened the season in the Georgia Dome with a thrilling win over North Carolina, Nick Chubb’s triumphant return from injury and a sign of things to come. But growing pains defined much of the year. The Dawgs barely survived Nicholls State at home, then suffered homecoming heartbreak against Vanderbilt, a gut-punch Hail Mary loss to Tennessee, and a rivalry stumble against Tech. Still, there were bright spots, none bigger than a hard-nosed victory over #8 Auburn Between the Hedges that hinted at the program’s future toughness.
